World Water Monitoring Day offers an opportunity to once again highlight the importance of monitoring water resources to assess their condition, identify changes, and ensure effective management.
The study of water resources in Armenia spans more than a century and a half. Today, qualitative and quantitative monitoring of water resources is carried out by the “Armhydromet” SNCO under the Ministry of Environment of the RA.
Surface water monitoring covers Armenia’s six river basin management areas: Northern, Akhuryan, Hrazdan, Sevan, Ararat, and Southern. The monitoring network includes rivers, reservoirs, the Arpa-Sevan tunnel, and Lake Sevan.
The monitoring process encompasses field observations and measurements, water sampling, laboratory analysis of samples, and analysis of the results obtained. From the field to the laboratory, and from laboratory results to scientifically grounded information about our waters, every sample, measurement, and analysis helps us better understand the state of our water resources, detect changes in a timely manner, and support their effective management.
