Ratification of the Nagoya Protocol Was Discussed

March 19, 2026

At the March 19 sitting of the Standing Committee on Territorial Administration, Local Self-Government, Agriculture and Environmental Protection, Minister Hambardzum Matevosyan presented the proposal to ratify the Nagoya Protocol to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
The Protocol aims at sharing the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources in a fair and equitable way.
This process is of particular significance in light of the fact that Yerevan will host the 17th Conference of the Parties to the CBD (COP17) in 2026 and will assume the presidency of the Convention processes for a two-year period.
Ratification of the Protocol will provide an opportunity to strengthen Armenia’s sovereign rights over its natural resources, promote scientific and technical cooperation, attract additional financial resources, and enhance the country’s international standing.
The initiative is in line with the programme of the Government of the Republic of Armenia and reflects commitments undertaken within the framework of the Armenia–EU partnership.
Although the Protocol does not conflict with existing legislation, certain regulatory adjustments will be required to ensure its effective implementation.
