G7 Session on Desertification and Water Challenges Was Held

April 27, 2026

A working session entitled “Desertification and Water Challenges in the Context of Security and Health” was held within the framework of the G7 Environment Ministers’ Meeting.
During the session, Hambardzum Matevosyan delivered remarks, emphasizing that the link between desertification and security is no longer hypothetical, but measurable and evident, requiring an urgent and coordinated response.
The Minister noted that ecosystem degradation has long gone beyond being solely an environmental issue, becoming a direct threat to economic stability, financial resilience, as well as national and regional security. In particular, land degradation and desertification act as threat multipliers, exacerbating water scarcity and reducing agricultural productivity.
These processes can lead to increased social tensions, forced migration, and, in certain contexts, instability and conflict.
