October 01, 2026

A decision-making system for riverbed management and flood prevention is set to be implemented in Armenia.
Ara Mkrtchyan, Deputy Minister of Environment of the RA, received a delegation from the “EU4Green Recovery East” Programme to discuss the process of implementing a decision-making system for riverbed management and flood prevention in Armenia, as well as the progress made in drafting the relevant conceptual document. Lilit Abrhamyan, Head of the Water Policy Department of the Ministry of Envionment of the RA and National Coordinator of the Programme, also attended the discussion.
Armenia aims to strengthen its capacity to prevent flood-related losses and to manage riverbeds through a modern, data-driven, and evidence-based decision-making system. By combining observations, hydrological and hydraulic modelling, water sector data interoperability, satellite monitoring, advanced analytics, and targeted river management measures, the aim is to enable state bodies to identify priority sections for riverbed clearing, forecast flood risks, evaluate management scenarios, and direct public investments towards risk reduction and measures that deliver maximum environmental value.
During the discussions, an agreement was reached to finalise the conceptual document with the programme’s support, including the detailed technical specifications for the system’s implementation, and to consider providing support for the operational arrangements proposed by the programme.
