About 120,000 Trout Fry Released into Lake Sevan on International Day for Biological Diversity
May 22, 2026
Today, the world marks the International Day for Biological Diversity, uniting efforts to conserve biodiversity, prevent nature loss and restore ecosystems.
As part of the day’s events, and at the initiative of the Ministry of Environment of the RA, around 120,000 trout fry were released into Lake Sevan as another important step towards restoring the lake’s biodiversity.
Lake Sevan is one of Armenia’s most important environmental symbols, and Sevan trout is an integral part of the country’s natural heritage. The release of trout fry is not only a measure aimed at restoring fish stocks, but also a long-term investment in the stability of the lake’s ecosystem, biodiversity conservation and environmental security for future generations.
The message of this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity, “Acting locally for global impact,” is particularly symbolic in this context. The project implemented in Lake Sevan is one of the best examples of this idea: every responsible step taken at the local level can become an important contribution to global environmental change.
Nature conservation begins with concrete actions. Every initiative aimed at restoring and preserving biodiversity contributes to the global environmental agenda and demonstrates that responsibility for the environment knows no borders.
In October, Armenia will host the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), which reflects both significant international trust and great responsibility. Armenia aims to make COP17 a platform not only for discussions, but also for real action and practical results toward developing joint and impactful solutions in the field of nature conservation.
